Fearing God

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.” (Proverbs 3:7)

So there’s this common idea, or misconception (which is a view or an opinion that is incorrect because it is based on faulty thinking or understanding) that suggests that we don’t have to be afraid of God. We’re being told (by people who obviously don’t fear God!) that fearing the Lord means just believing in Him or just “respecting” His position as God. But God is not the president or some big boss of your company. He is our heavenly Father. And what child (with any sense!) isn’t afraid of their parent’s wrath!?

See we’ve gotten this thing all backwards. We ARE to be afraid of God. What we aren’t to do is fear man. Man is who we should be merely “respecting”.

Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.” (1 Peter 2:17)

See pastors who tell you not to be afraid of God are most likely the same pastors who don’t preach repentance or holiness. That’s the problem with these churches now. But how many of you know that truly fearing God is the only way that we will depart from evil and become acceptable to Him. Yes, we are drawn by His love and kindness but it is the FEAR of the Lord that keeps up abiding.

By mercy and lovingkindness and truth [not superficial ritual] wickedness is cleansed from the heart, And by the fear of the Lord one avoids evil. (Proverbs 16:6, AMP)

If we want our relationship with the Lord to be more than shallow and sensual (or emotional)  then we better get serious about HIS terms and HIS standards. Being afraid of God will not hinder your relationship with Him. As a matter of fact, it will make it better than ever! Because this is when you will begin to experience true love for and intimacy with the Father.

The secret [of the sweet, satisfying companionship] of the Lord have they who fear (revere and worship) Him, and He will show them His covenant and reveal to them its [deep, inner] meaning.” (Psalm 25:14, AMPC)

So I just wanted to briefly address this mindset, and more importantly, leave you with a few scriptures to get acquainted with. Let’s stop playing with God.

With nothing but love, Brandi

Psalm 34:11-16, NET Come children! Listen to me! I will teach you what it means to fear  the LordDo you want to really live? Would you love to live a long, happy life? Then make sure you don’t speak evil words or use deceptive speech! Turn away from evil and do what is right! Strive for peace and promote it! The Lord pays attention to the godly
and hears their cry for help. But the Lord opposes evildoers
and wipes out all memory of them from the earth.”

Job 28:28  And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”

Matthew 10:28 “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Philippians 2:12-13 “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

Psalm 147:10-11 He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy.”

*Please note that we obey God because we love Him (and are in agreement with His perfect ways!). Enslaving, tormenting and condemning fear is not of the Father. Remember, we had a choice to either accept or reject the gospel!

John 14:21-24, NET The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.” “Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him. The person who does not love me does not obey my words. And the word you hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.”

1 John 4:14-18, NLT And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us.  Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.  All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.”
